All Hallow’s Eve – Melbourne Style!

Local Community

Carved glowing pumpkins…. ghosts…. zombies and swathes of spiderwebs… yes, that’s right folks - Chisholm & Gamon are ready for Halloween 2013 and we’re channelling The Addams Family for all things freaky. This traditionally American celebration has been embraced by Melbournians in a creepy eight-armed hug. For the ghoulish amongst you, there is no shortage of events this week to help you get into the Halloween vibe.

Do you think Melbourne is haunted? Have a hankering to see a wee Melburnian ghostie? Cue the Halloween Victoria Market Ghost Tour.  The “Vic Market” (as it is fondly known) may appear unassuming during the day – but it’s night-time when things when things really light up. Did you know that the current Victoria Market site was the first general cemetery in Melbourne? With approximately 50,000 bodies buried there, many ghost experts believe a ghost’s power depends on the deceased’s fame in the living world.  An interesting thought, given that John Batman (founder of Melbourne) is buried there. Another fascinating rumour sure to chill your spine is that two bushrangers prowl the fruit section of the Victoria Market between midnight and dawn – so how about it?

A less-chilling Halloween activity for the whole family to enjoy is Luna DarkLuna Park transforms itself into a playground for little ghosts and ghouls in their annual event. Deck yourself out in full costume to really make the most of this fun night out - you will also enjoy unlimited ride tickets for making the effort. Marvels on offer include stilt walkers, zombies and the creepiest of clowns.  Throw in black fairy floss and green popcorn for a bit of eeek factor and the kids are sure to be thrilled to Halloween bits. Free cover charge and open until 11pm – go on, extend the kid’s bedtime hour this once.

One of Chisholm & Gamon’s favorite Halloween activities for 2013 is Spooktober at the Gables Mansion. This haunted house in Malvern will have you trembling from the moment you step foot onto its creaking floorboards. Follow resident Butler Dobson - your ghostly guide for the night – as you meet the various ghostly residents of the mansion. Hourly prizes are up for grabs for those in costume – plus an array of treats will sooth the nerves of all who make it out of the house in one piece!

If your little monsters are a wee bit young for Luna Dark, Three Four Knock on the Door Halloween Celebrations will be right up your alley. Enjoy an afternoon of terrible treats, horrible crafts and the spookiest of stories! Door prizes for the best dressed and lots of lollies will be on offer for trick or treating (so don’t forget your lolly basket). This is a free event where booking is essential at Three Four Knock on the Door – 46 Nott Street Port Melbourne.
