The Moomba Festival - beloved by Chisholm and Gamon and Melbournians alike - is taking over the heart of the city come Labour Day weekend. No plans for your three day break? Head to Moomba where kids and adults alike will be treated to an array of entertainment courtesy of the City of Melbourne: here’s C&G’s best of the fest.

In 2015, the Moomba festival continues its famous traditions – both kitsch and modern. Each year Moomba is presided over by an honorary King and Queen, and this year we’ll be waving to Moomba King, cricketer Shane Warne and Moomba Queen, Australian-born Bollywood star Pallavi Sharda. The celebratory Moomba Parade will take place on Monday 9th of March at 11am, featuring over 2000 marchers, dancers and acrobats in an energetic procession which starts at the Shrine and makes its way up St Kilda Road towards the city. \

Fly, fly, my pretties! Since 1976 Birdman Rally competitors have leapt into the Yarra River, floating as far as their makeshift wings will allow them. Expect big laughs, silly outfits and lots of spluttering on Sunday the 8th of March. Fancy a more professional watersports display? The Moomba Masters attracts water skiing professionals globally – and this year, five world record holders will be competing. With around 1.3 million guests tipped to watch the skiers battle over jumps from the banks of the Yarra, arrive early to secure your position.

The Kids Zone and Mini Tents on Birrarung Marr are a hive of activities for the little ones during Moomba: have your face painted by a professional artist, get creative and make your own accessories or try your hand at creating a puppet. If your son or daughter loves Frozen, then allow them to ‘let it go’ by skating at the ice rink. Future cultural ambassador on your hands? Allow your kids to try their hand at designing a float for next year’s Moomba Parade.

Love music? Don’t miss the Battle of the Bands, featuring The Hoodoo Gurus and You Am I on the main stage. Check out local music talent at The Green, an ideal place to chill on lush lawns while listening to live tunes – a break from Moomba madness. While you’re there, you also have the chance to learn how to drum at workshops running all weekend.

These activities are only a snapshot of the Moomba festivities planned. Whether you’re a thrill-seeker, a connoisseur of fireworks or a lover of parades – there’s something fun for you to enjoy at Moomba 2015. For full details on the festival, click here
