C&G Highlights : St Kilda Festival 2014

Local Community

It’s that time of the year again, when the streets of St Kilda are closed off from traffic and opened up to thousands of Melbournians. C&G want you to join us in celebrating one of Australia’s oldest and most iconic events - the St Kilda Festival!

What began as a one-day event has now expanded into a nine-day festival extravaganza, taking place in numerous venues and locations spanning the entire St Kilda precinct. Usually attracting between 200,000 and 400,000 attendees, this phenomenal festa doesn’t have a rich 30-plus year-old history for nothing! From presenting great Aussie music, interactive activities and extreme sports to visual arts, comedy, dance classes and wacky workshops hosted by local community groups, there is something for everyone at St Kilda Festival.

Saturday 1st February

The Festival takes flight with Yalukit Wilum Ngaree: People Place Gathering – an indigenous arts and music event presented a week out from Festival Sunday (the main event) in O’Donnell Gardens. This event gives local clanspeople the chance to welcome all to celebrate in St Kilda. This event features community stalls, local and interstate musicians and great activities for the kiddies. A fun-filled family day not to be missed!

Sunday 2 February until Saturday 8 February

Following from the welcoming event, the Festival commences its ‘Live N Local’ program, which sees more than 32 local traders inviting in over 72 local musicians, comics and poets to the community. You can expect a wide variety of live performances and art exhibitions filling the streets of St Kilda in the week leading up to Festival Sunday.

Sunday 9th February

It’s what you’ve all been waiting for - the main event - Festival Sunday! Traditionally held on the second Sunday in February, this iconic day sees the streets of St Kilda closed off to all traffic and opened up to the people of Melbourne. The crème de la crème of Australian musicians play over five stages, including Australian soulstress Renee Geyer, indie-rock band Kingswood and emerging artist Shaun Kirk (winner of the New Music Stage competition in 2013), while people of all ages can enjoy the diverse mix of performers, workshops, sport demonstrations, buskers and a whole lot more.
