C&G Invite You to Sleep at the ‘G!

Local Community

C&G invite you to help end youth homelessness this Thursday by sleeping at the ‘G. Join thousands of fellow Victorians in a sleep out at the MCG to experience what life is like for Australia’s young homeless and raise awareness of their situation. But be quick – registrations are open and tickets are selling fast!

Sleep at the ‘G is the major fundraising initiative of Melbourne City Mission. 2015 marks the event’s third year, and Melbourne City Mission hope to raise $600,000 to help young people at risk. So far they have raised $238,934 so with a few more sleepers – and a few more sponsors – they may just reach their goal.

So what’s the difference between a sleeper and a sponsor? Sleepers will actually experience a night of ‘sleeping rough’ at the MCG, while sponsors can help fund sleepers to help them reach their fundraising goals. You can view sleeper profiles online and click to sponsor them an amount of your choosing.

As for sleepers, you can register to attend the event online and start up your profile page. Registration costs $60 and includes a Sleep at the ‘G beanie, a cardboard box to sleep on for the night, and something to eat and drink (soup and bread rolls for dinner, tea and coffee, and a light breakfast).

So why should you participate? Whether you decide to be a sleeper or a sponsor, participating in Sleeping at the ‘G is a worthwhile cause: homelessness is not only dangerous, ostracising, and depressing, but research has shown that the severe effects of youth homelessness (lack of education and healthcare, for example) have ramifications that affect a person’s life forever. By joining the ‘G, you’ll be helping Melbourne City Mission to break the cycle of disadvantage and isolation felt by homeless youths.
