C&G Strolls: 53 Stokes Street Port Melbourne

Local Community

Local Melbourne businessman, Thomas Swallow, first built this Stokes Street icon as a biscuit factory approximately 150 years ago. Today, the
Swallow & Ariell building is a trendy, converted warehouse blending old world architecture with stunning modern fixtures. The development is known as the Anchorage, and what better place to throw down your anchor than in the sunny surrounds of Port Melbourne? C&G takes you for a stroll to see the sights.

Your Local

Mr Lawrence at the London has loads of seating both indoors and out, with top-notch service, fine dining options and regular pizza nights. The menu has Middle Eastern flair, with a range of wines to match. The vibe is friendly, intimate and relaxing.

Recreation & Relaxation

Sunset walks along the beach are the only cliché around here, and a welcome cliché they are! Strolling down Beach Street, you’ll pass the Port Melbourne Yacht Club, Port Melbourne Lifesaving Club and miles of sand and sea. Continue heading east and Beaconsfield Parade will take you to St Kilda, only about 5km over.

Decanters by the Bay

One of the best boutique bottle shops in Melbourne is just a short walk around the block. They’ve got a huge range of local, regional and imported wines, craft beers and artisan spirits – and if they don’t have it, they’ll get it in for you.

Public transport

The city light rail is the 109 tram, running just one street over, going directly to the city via Spencer Street and Collins. You can be at Southern Cross in under fifteen minutes.

South Melbourne Market

Since 1867, the South Melbourne Market has been a vibrant hub not only to shop for fresh fruit, vegetables and seafood but to meet up with friends, drink good coffee and discover new happenings within the community. Access the market by bike or car (free parking available).

Station Pier

While it’s been over one hundred years since the Titanic took its doomed maiden voyage from England, we still get a little bit excited when we see the huge international ocean Liners that dock at Station Pier between November and February. You’ll also find the docking terminal for the Spirit of Tasmania here.

Other highlights include Rubiras at Swallows, an award-winning seafood restaurant with some of the best scampi in town, and Matilda Bay Brewing Co., serving delicious burgers and local craft beer for lunch and dinner daily.

And there you have it! We’re sure the new owners of 53 Stokes Street will cultivate their own favourite things to do, and there’s no shortage of things about Port Melbourne to be excited about. Whether you’re an epicurean, fitness fanatic, busy professional or retiree, you’ll find your place in Port!
