CG’s Cinematic Summer in St Kilda

Local Community

Ah, summer. There’s nothing quite like it for wanting to flop down, switch off your brain by watching a movie, and maybe eat some ice cream while you’re at it. Thankfully, Melbourne is home to some stunner seasonal cinematic experiences, and Chisholm and Gamon is here to let you know the top picks of flicks this summer.

From November 30 to December 21, South Beach Reserve – right by the St Kilda Sea Baths – is home to the Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema. What better way to wind down after a sunny day than to chill on the Esplanade and take in a movie? Grab a bite of dinner, a drink from the licensed bar, and, of course, some famous Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Bring a picnic blanket, or hire a beanbag chair, and sit wherever you please! Our top tip: arrive early to nab the best view of the screen. Arriving early will also let you take in as much of the pre-show live music as you can.

Gone Girl is one of this summer’s must-see movies, so why not see it out in the open air? It’s a suspense thriller that will have your spine chilled, no matter the weather outside.

If you have small children, or are a massive Disney fan yourself, there’s a chance you know the entire Frozen soundtrack off by heart. You might even have found yourself practicing ‘Let It Go’ in the shower… If this is the case, you cannot miss the Frozen sing-a-long session on December 13. Don’t put all that practice to waste!

Who can resist a cult-classic of a film, featuring David Bowie’s codpiece and mullet? We are, of course, talking about Labyrinth, an 80s classic that can’t be beat when it’s on the big screen.

Each Sunday is a special treat, with the Ben & Jerry’s Sundae Session. Enjoy the festival atmosphere before the day’s film, with a collection of live bands, lawn games, and – the piece de resistance – free all you can eat Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

Don’t be sad that the Openair Cinema only runs through December! The Moonlight Cinema in the Royal Botanic Gardens is releasing its program for the summer on November 19. Keep an eye out, and you’ll be enjoying outdoor entertainment until the end of March.
