Chisholm & Gamon: A Civilised Summer

Local Community

Summertime is fast approaching (though, being Melbourne, you might not have believed us earlier in the week!) and the idea of summer days spent on sprawling lawns with good company, good conversation and good times is almost universally appealing. Today, Chisholm and Gamon bring you up to date on the summer’s most civilised events.

An area of the Queen Victoria Gardens has been recently and temporarily civilised, with MPavaillion (inset above) making its home there for the summer. Until the start of February, you can pop along to this collaboration of architecture, talks, workshops, performances and installations.

MPavillion opens every morning at 8am, and when we say “open”, we really mean it physically opens out and unfurls like any other flower in the garden. Take a detour to get your morning coffee and watch a spectacle of architecture while you’re at it.

Avoid the dreaded summer-induced brain melt by listening to thoughts on architecture and design from innovative minds of Melbourne’s leading researchers, designers and curators during a Tuesday-evening MTalk. To embrace sunny Sunday-afternoon relaxation, you can’t miss the weekly MMusic performance. Make sure to have a peek at the program to stay up to date with what’s happening, or take a spontaneous stroll to see what’s on.

Move over Spring Racing Carnival, Melbourne may have a new favourite equine sport! For a royally good start to the summer, don’t miss Polo in the City. Spend a sunny Saturday watching one of the oldest sports in the world, while enjoying the Stella Artois Polo Lounge. If a marquee is more your style, make a day of it with a group of friends, or celebrate the impending year-end with your colleagues. Whichever your pick, make sure to book soon – spaces are filling up quickly!

Don’t fret if you don’t know anything about polo; it’s very straightforward, and what better place to learn than Australia’s only national polo series? Perhaps you’ll leave with a new ambition for your civilised summer: learning to ride and play, yourself

Do you play… croquet? Or rather, do you enjoy wining and dining and a casual spot of croquet? Either way, come January, you’ll be able to do exactly this at Birrarung Marr, thanks to Adelaide’s Royal Croquet Club. Broadsheet is curating the food from Melbourne’s best-loved restaurants, cafes, food trucks and producers, so you know you’re in for a treat!
