Bayside history buffs, the week you’ve been waiting for has arrived! From the 15th to the 22nd of October, Victoria is celebrating History Week and there are so many entertaining and informative events to enjoy. Today, C&G provide you with a few historical highlights of the program. Are you ready to step back in time?

Beyond the Rock with Janelle McCulloch

In an exciting event for Picnic at Hanging Rock fans, journalist, writer, and photographer Janelle McCulloch will be at appearing at Frankston Library during History Week to discuss her book Beyond the Rock: The Life of Joan Lindsay and the Mystery of Hanging Rock. McCulloch is an esteemed Australian author who has published extensively on design, architecture and gardens. This is sure to be a day of literary nostalgia, knowledge sharing and perhaps a few mysteries will be solved! More information here.

August Rietman – Unknown Stone Carver

On October 15th, the City of Moorabbin Historical Society will present an exhibition on the adventurous sculptor and carver, August Rietman, at the Box Cottage Museum in Ormond. Rietman was a Swiss-German émigré who lived in the original Box Cottage from 1917. The exhibition also traces Rietman’s role in memorializing Victoria’s World War 1 volunteer soldiers, and his contribution to the local economy and cultural heritage. Mapping Port Melbourne’s Past

On the evening of October 17th, Baysiders will enjoy a presentation by Port Melbourne Historical & Preservation Society members, Janet Bolitho and Margaret Bride. This presentation will explore the use of historic maps and aerial photos to track changes to the Port Melbourne/ Fishermans Bend area over time. There will also be discussions focused on the area’s future – so you’re welcome to come along and share your future thoughts. Information here. 

My Marvelous Melbourne: Podcast Launch 

Podcast people, this one’s for you! ‘My Marvelous Melbourne’ is a brand new 30-minute podcast produced by staff and students involved in the Melbourne History Workshop at the University of Melbourne. The podcast will combine anecdotes, interviews and memories of Melbourne that interest and inspire. This will be a virtual launch, so get involved via your device on October 19th. More details here.
