IN THE PINK: Elwood College Stumps Up For Breast Cancer Charity

Local Community

Elwood College turned pink for a day in February, raising more than $2000 for the McGrath Foundation.

Four Year 9 students organised the Pink Stumps Day on 26 February for their Community Project. Students James Fisher, Howie Persson, Dae Syzdlik and Oliver Woods said they were “stoked” to donate the money and raise awareness about breast cancer in the Elwood community.

In a sign of the close relationship between the two schools, Elwood Primary also got involved.

Firstly, the Year 9s organised for Cricket Victoria to run a T20 Blast competition for the primary school’s Grade 4 students. In the lead up to the day, the Year 9s ran coaching clinics to get the younger students ‘match fit’.

A big highlight was the presence of several cr icket stars who donated their time: former Victorian batsman Graeme Vimpani, Southern Stars player Nicole Bolton and Vic Spirits players Elyse Villani and Sarah Elliot.

Then it was time for a very serious ‘staff versus students’ match, with the Elwood College teachers relieved to notch up a win.

All Year 9 students at Elwood College complete a community project, as part of the school’s It’s Up 2 Me Year 9 program.

“A special thanks to (Head of Physical Education) Scott Burton for all his support. Without him, this event wouldn’t have been possible. Thanks to Pets of Elwood, Food works on Ormond Road, Elwood Cricket Club, City of Port Phillip, The Leader, Red Zed and Boutique Financial Solutions for their support and donations. We really appreciated all the support of the staff and students of Elwood College,” the students said.
