Preparing Your Home for Summer

Local Community

The temperature is rising, which means it’s time to summer-up your home. Whether it’s prepping your yard for barbecue season or making sure you’ll stay cool as the mercury rises, preparing early is key. C&G have compiled a to-do list to make sure everything’s in place.

1.     Fix your air conditioning

There’s nothing worse than trying to escape the heat, only to find your home is a sauna in itself. If you’ve been meaning to fix your cooling unit since last winter, get it sorted now before peak season hits. Even if your unit is in good condition, replacing the filter or having it serviced will keep everything in top shape for longer. If you own investment property, considering installing air conditioning which can improve quality of life for your tenants – and allow you to command a higher rental yield. It’ll also control humidity and moisture levels in the home which can help minimize any mould or condensation issues.

2.     Prune the Garden, Trim the Tree

In the winter months, it’s often easy to let your garden grow wild and free - but come summer, you’ll be wanting to indulge in alfresco dinner and coffee on the deck while surveying your domain. Get stuck into the garden, ensuring everything is mowed and trimmed before the heat sets in. Not only will this reduce the fire danger, it will also make ongoing maintenance during the summer months little hassle.

3. Bring out the summer décor

In winter, interior design is all about cosy, dark colours and warm décor – but summer demands a much brighter, cooler atmosphere. Swap out your thick doona for something lighter, and change your linens to a summer theme – or a classic crisp white. Have a spring clean, open the windows wide and choose freshly scented candles or seasonal flowers to herald the charge in season.

 4.     Organise Your Wardrobe

A disorganised wardrobe makes for stressful mornings and a messy bedroom. Pack away your winter clothes as you won’t need them for a good few months, and make room for your summer items. You’ll save space and the home will feel decluttered and more streamline. Dividing your wardrobe into seasons is also an ideal way to survey what you have – what no longer suits and can go to charity, and what might need to go in the bin!

5. Fire up the BBQ

Prep your deck and barbecue for summer. Give everything a good clean, and replace anything that’s past its prime. You’ll thank yourself on those balmy nights when you’re party ready and low on cleaning motivation.
