The Best Bayside Trails for Walking Off Your Christmas Dinner

Local Community

What’s Christmas without a good feast? It’s the season for indulgence, but that doesn’t stop us from feeling like a very full Santa Claus when it comes to an end! Today, C&G has collated some of our favourite walking trails on the southside, giving you some strolling relief from those hefty Christmas dinners.

Bayside Coastal Trail

Stretching for 17 glorious kilometres, the Bayside Coastal Trail runs from Brighton to Beaumaris. Passing through Sandringham, Hampton and Black Rock, take on the whole stretch of coastline or as much as you fancy. It’s always worth stopping off at Half Moon Bay on your sojourn, as you may catch a glimpse of some aquatic life, or simply enjoy the stunning view across bay and the city skyline.

Albert Park Lake

Bask in the natural beautiful of an amazing Aussie Christmas Day walk and watch the sun hit the lake’s waters at Albert Park. The 5km track around the water’s edge has a water station at each kilometre, picnic spots and public barbecues. Bring the little ones along, too – they’ll enjoy the playground stops along the way, giving parents and grandparents a chance to rest weary legs. It’s the perfect active recovery from the stresses leading up to Christmas, and you can show the out-of-town rellies the very best of Melbourne.

Foreshore Trail

Tracing the coastline of Hobson’s Bay, the 11km trail stretches from Sandridge to Elwood, celebrating the foreshore of Port Phillip. With bay views in abundance, fresh ocean air and pit stops aplenty, this is the perfect long haul walk for the serious southside foodie. You’ll feel ready for a plate of cold cuts in no time after cracking this lengthy trail. For those who prefer an afternoon snooze, turn back at any point. Appreciating the views a second time around never goes astray.

More Inspiration

The impressive stretch of coastline we’re blessed with here in Bayside is packed with rich history, from the arts to indigenous communities. Depending on your interests, there’s plenty of break stops and information signs which tell the tales of the bay from several perspectives. Bayside City Council provides maps and guides to give you an overview of the different immersive walks you can do on the coast. If you’re feeling adventurous, let your imagination guide you on the day, with the help of the interactive Walks and Trails smartphone app.
