Up There Cazaly: The Reclink Community Cup Turns 21!

Local Community

What do you get when iconic Melbourne musos come together to play football and support a worthy community cause? You get the
Reclink Community Cup, that’s what: a chance for music fans, performers and local footy enthusiasts to get together, raise funds and tear up the turf at Elsternwick Park. Sounds fun? You betcha – in today’s C&G blog we give you a potted history of the Reclink Community Cup and urge you to get involved in the scrum.

Now celebrating its 21st birthday, the Reclink Community Cup has become somewhat a favorite on the bayside sporting calendar. A game of AFL (played in the style of the indigenous game, marngrook) is played out between two infamous teams: the Megahertz in red and white guernseys, and the Espy Rockdogs in their black, yellow and red stripes. An epic game of footy, played competitively by the on-air broadcasters of community radio stations including PBS and RRR (team Megahertz) and musos from the Melbourne live performance scene (team Rockdogs). There’s a healthy turnover of players each year too – including a minimum of five women on the field for each team.

Funds raised on the day go to Reclink, a non-profit organisation whose reason for being is to provide and promote sport and art programs for people experiencing disadvantage. Changing lives since 1990, Reclink offer over 10,000 activities and 100,000 participation opportunities for disadvantaged Australians annually – these include vulnerable and isolated people, those with mental health challenges, and those suffering from disability, homelessness and substance abuse.

Gates to Elsternwick Park open on the 21st of June at noon with a kick-off at 2:30 pm – there’s also music to be enjoyed with a full line-up of bands to enjoy being announced soon on the official Reclink Cup website. Last year, feature acts included tub-thumping crowd favorites Saskwatch and the Painters and Dockers, and 2015 will be similarly excellent.

Lastly, don’t forget to bring your Sherrin to the game – there’s some pretty legendary kick-to-kick that’s enjoyed at the Reclink Community Cup each year, so join in the madcap fun!
