ANZAC Day presents us with the opportunity to remember those who have served, fought, and given their lives in service of our country, honoring their courage, mateship and perseverance. Falling on Thursday the 25th of April 2019, this week’s C&G blog shares local ANZAC Day events where you can show your support.

Elwood ANZAC Day Service

Held on the beautiful Elwood foreshore, this ANZAC Day event involves a formal service, breakfast and memorabilia display. It’s sure to be a beautiful and intimate way to commemorate those who have fought to preserve our freedom and contributed to war efforts both in Australia and overseas. Remember to bring a gold coin donation to cover your breakfast!

Where: Elwood Foreshore (adjacent to Elwood Sailing Club)

When: Service commences at 9am

Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance

The Shrine of Remembrance was erected as a symbol of gratitude and respect for soldiers who have fought bravely in times of conflict. It serves as the location for the main ANZAC Day commemoration held in Melbourne, which involves the traditional dawn service and march down St Kilda Road directly followed by a service in the Shrine Forecourt. This event is worth the early morning wake up call, and it’s surely something all Melbournians should attend at least once.

Where: Shrine of Remembrance, St Kilda Rd

When: Arrive between 4am - 5am for a 6am start

ANZAC Day Football

The annual AFL clash between Essendon and Collingwood is a light-hearted way to enjoy some ANZAC tradition. This year marks the 25th time these two teams have come together and it’s not one to be missed as 80,000 AFL fans gather to show some ANZAC spirit. Tickets here: https://bit.ly/2X4NyBa.

Quiet Reflection in the Remembrance Garden

A beautiful World War One memorial garden has been established in Port Melbourne to help our community better understand the significance of somber war-era events. Head here on ANZAC Day for some quiet contemplation and take some time to reflect on what ANZAC Day means to you.
