A Bayside Story: Acland Street, St Kilda

Local Community

Originally home to numerous European émigrés who brought with them the traditional, lip-smacking cakes and pastries from their homelands, Acland Street is famous for its decadent desserts and quirky atmosphere. In today’s blog, C&G share with you the sweet treasures found on this iconic Melbourne Street!

Operating since 1934, Monarch Cakes has been plying the sweet-tooths of Melbourne with their baked goods for over 75 years. Monarch are proud of their traditional recipes and methods, as they continue baking as forebears did, using ingredients in their most natural form. There are numerous delicious sweets to try, but a Monarch MUST is their Polish Cheesecake (above left), which has been made the same way since the early 1920’s and comes recommended in a top travel guide as one of the four best things to experience in Melbourne! Another must-try top-treat is Monarch’s famous Chocolate Kooglhoupf (above right). Although hard to pronounce, it has developed quite the following amongst St Kilda locals. C&G recommend dropping in for a cake and coffee - keep in mind that you can always order their cakes online too!
