C&G's Guide to 2017’s ANZAC Day Celebrations
ANZAC Day is a time for remembrance, to pay our respects to those who made the ultimate commitment and sacrifice. There are many commemorations and events being held across Bayside and the wider Melbourne area on Tuesday 25 April 2017. Read on for a short list of C&G’s picks, as well as some extra information you might find useful on the day.
Field of Remembrance / Children’s ANZAC Service in Hampton
This year, Hampton RSL is holding their ANZAC ‘Field of Remembrance’ commemoration on Friday 21 April. The event involves the planting of white wooden crosses as a symbolic gesture for those who lost their lives. The ceremony is now combined with the Hampton Rotary Children’s ANZAC Day Service for local schools.

Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance
If you’re planning to make a trip out of Bayside and into the city, Melbourne’s largest dawn service begins at 6 am at the Shrine of Remembrance on St Kilda Road. The service will start with a traditional gunfire breakfast, available for a gold coin donation, followed by a Veteran’s march to the Shrine from Princes Bridge. A service will be held on the Shrine Forecourt to wrap up the service. Visitors are recommended to assemble on the Shrine Forecourt between 4 and 5 am.

Live music at Dromana
Fancy heading out after the commemorative events? Catch Nick Charles, an Australian guitar icon, playing tunes from 1 pm at Hickinbotham of Dromana on the Mornington Peninsula.

Collingwood v Essendon ANZAC Day game
It wouldn’t be ANZAC Day without the classic Collingwood v Essendon clash. Relax at home with the family, head out to a local Bayside bar to watch all the action, or grab a ticket and get down to the MCG. The Local in Port Melbourne is a great spot to catch the game on TV. Starts at 3.20 pm.

Getting around over the weekend and on the day
Veterans and War Widows can travel for free on public transport on 24, 25 and 26 April.
Australian Defence Force members, Scouts and Guides and school students are also able to travel free on ANZAC Day if they’re wearing their uniform.
Free RSL dawn service shuttle buses are also available from selected RSLs and the suburbs, to the Shrine of Remembrance for the dawn service. To secure your place, make sure to book online before the day.
