C&G’s Guide to Celebrating Mother’s Day at Home

Local Community

Sunday the 10th of May marks Mother’s Day, where we celebrate our mums and the important women in our lives. Unfortunately, given the current lockdown restrictions, many of us are unable to host our normal traditions and some may need to celebrate Mother’s Day 2020 from afar. However, you can still show Mum some love with these thoughtful ideas from C&G’s latest blog. Have a read, and happy Mother’s Day!

Send her a gift.

If you don’t live with your mother, perhaps you can make her day by sending a surprise in the mail? Since we’re all spending more time at home, homewares such as candles, vases, artworks and blankets are popular choices. It’s a busy time for online retailers, so make sure you get in early to avoid any delays! If you need more ideas, check out these gift guides courtesy of Broadsheet, Bed Threads, LifeHacker and Etsy!

Have brunch, iso-style.

Treat Mum to a lovely breakfast in bed, or host a brunch session over Zoom or Skype! As Mother’s Day falls on a Sunday, we can all hopefully dedicate the day to family bonding. If your mum’s favourite brunch spot is offering takeaway or home delivery, look into surprising her with her favourite dish.

Here’s some of our local eating favourites offering special Mother’s Day meals:

Dandelion in Elwood have a tasty at home Mother’s Day banquet with 6 courses! Or if you are craving an all-time favourite Sunday roast Blue Tongue has got you covered with their Mother’s Day roast at $35pp and Hanoi Mee in Port Melbourne have a delicious fully licensed menu available for pick up or delivery.

If you both enjoy cooking, you can also bake or cook something special to share. Looking for delicious brunch recipes? These dishes courtesy of BBC good food should do the trick!

Watch a movie together.

Gather the family and watch Mum’s favourite movie together. Whether you’re doing this from the same household or online, end the day by cosying up on the couch with a blanket and hot chocolate. If you have a Netflix subscription you can install Netflix Party as a plug-in on your computer browser, and stream the movie at the same time! Designed especially for social distancing, you can use the in-app chat function to talk to your family during the film.

Go on a virtual museum tour.

Under normal circumstances, a day out at the NGV sounds like wonderful Mother’s Day plans. This year, we might just have to settle for the next best thing: virtual tours! You can see the latest exhibitions including Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat: Crossing Lines and Kaws: Companionship in the Age of Loneliness – all from the comfort of your couch!
