Four Ways To Celebrate Chinese New Year in Melbourne

Local Community

The town of Melbourne will soon be painted red for the annual Chinese New Year festivities. From fireworks to cracking good food, today on the Chisholm & Gamon blog, we’re sharing four great ways to celebrate the year of the goat.

Crouching Tiger Hidden Goat

It’s worth exploring the city in the lead up to Chinese New Year thanks to this competition. 50 goat motifs have been hidden around Chinatown, waiting to be found. If you find one, simply take a photo of yourself with it, hashtag #crouchingtigerhiddengoat and tag @7newsmelbourne and @chinesenewyearfestival to go in the draw to win one of four ultimate Chinese New Year celebration weekends. The prize package includes two nights at the Quest on Bourke Hotel, dinner for two at Lost Heaven Restaurant, Tea Ceremony at the Penjing Tea Garden, Xiangclub Signature Traditional Chinese Foot Massage and the opportunity to see all the festivities of White Night and the Dragon Parade. The winner will be drawn on 16th February so get snapping!

Lau’s Family Kitchen

Bookings are recommended for this popular Bayside Cantonese restaurant from ex-Flower Drum Gillbert Lau. A great family atmosphere, the food is delicious to eat and to look at. Dishes include wild barramundi, wonton soup and sweet vinegar pork loin as well as inventive twists on old favourites like salt and pepper calamari and spring rolls. With a pleasant buzz and authentic atmosphere, it’s a great way to get into the celebratory spirit.

Hidden Dragon Outdoor Cinema

As White Night takes over Melbourne, be sure to secure yourself a spot at the Hidden Dragon Outdoor Cinema where you’ll find a tribute to the martial arts with classic movies like Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Rush Hour and Kung Fu Panda as well as sword dancing and kung fu demonstrations. Lounge on the turf or hire a bean bag from sunset to sunrise.

Lumen Laneways

Uncover some of Melbourne’s best hidden bars in Chinatown’s laneways thanks to projected art installations curated by RMIT School of Art. Every night from Monday 16th February to Sunday 1st March, bars like Croft Institute and Section 8 will be light up with interactive experiences from four different artists. Just follow the light (or the map references!) to discover a new favourite!

Plus, don’t forget to head to the corner of Little Bourke and Russel Sts at 10:30pm for the official countdown to ensure you don’t miss the lion dance and spectacular fireworks.
