By participating in the open day, you’ll learn about the benefits and beauty a courtyard can bring your home – a la the grand master himself, Robin Boyd.  The ball is in YOUR court!

Robin Boyd (January 1919 - October 1971) is remembered as an Australian architectural icon, noted as one of the principal proponents of the International Modern Movement in Australian architecture. As an influential architect, Boyd is best known and recognised for his numerous and innovative small house designs. Some of his works include....

  • Alan Brown House 1 (ca.1949), Toorak Road, Malvern, Victoria.
  • Handfield House (1960), Eltham, Victoria.

Established in January 2005, The Robin Boyd Foundation strives to continue the work and spirit of the man himself. Each year they present an active, inventive and ongoing series of public learning programs, created to raise individual and community awareness, understanding, and participation in design. The Robin Boyd Foundation aspires to increase the promotion of the benefits of design through design awareness, literacy and advocacy. On Sunday the 8th of December the Robin Boyd Foundation will present ‘Courtyards 2013,’ a public open day consisting of five ‘Courtyard Houses,’ designed for the inner city. First embraced by Melbourne architects during the 60’s and 70’s courtyards as adjuncts to a living space have come back into vogue. Courtyards can offer you….

  • Privacy and amenity for restricted inner city sites.
  • They provide both light and an outdoor living environment.
  • They are ideally suited to Melbourne’s climate and Melbournian’s ‘outdoor lifestyle.’
  • They improve the environmental and social sustainability of houses.

Courtyards 2013 offers the public an opportunity to view five exemplary houses where courtyards are a focal design point and a key component in structuring and elevating the domestic setting.
