Party In The USA

Local Community

Fickle, aren’t we? Melbournites go from food trend to food trend with Instagram-fuelled enthusiasm, from the 90’s focaccia and sticky date pudding to today’s obsession with dumplings and all things Americana. We’ve noticed that the bayside in particular has taken to American-style down-home cooking with particular enthusiasm – so on today’s C&G blog, it’s a party in the USA! Where is your favourite place to enjoy a juicy bbq-sauce laden rack of ribs or slow-raised glazed donut? Tell us on Twitter @chisholmgamonproperty with the hashtag #candgfeedme!

Eat Heavy – USA Foods

An icon of the south, USA Foods in Moorabbin specializes in American treats you simply won’t find anywhere else. Want authentic hot sauce to surprise (and maybe stun) at your next BBQ? Try Heartbreaking Dawn’s Cauterizer Scorpion on for size. Yearning for a classic soft drink? There’s Root Beer, Cherry Coke, Dr Pepper and Snapple to seriously upgrade your drinks fridge. With Thanksgiving coming up, why not try your hand at a Thanksgiving feast with all the trimmings from USA Foods – they suggest Turkey with stuffing, gravy, cranberry sauce, sweet potato, mac and cheese, peas and carrots, corn bread and pumpkin pie (of course!).

Misty’s Diner

Serving classic American diner food to the enthusiastic hordes of the north since 2002, Misty’s Diner in Prahran is truly an institution.  With a unique 1950’s rock n’ roll feel, Misty’s serves delicious heart stopping fare such as chili-cheese fries, American style burgers, bubbling baked mac n’ cheese, Long Island hotdogs and icy-cold shakes (made with ice-cream, not milk!). The dessert list is equally moreish with a Texas Brownie, Diner Banana Split and Red Velvet Volcano on offer. We drool.  Do you dare to take on the Misty’s Diner Burger Challenge?!

Hole In One

What would a dedication to Melbourne’s love of American fare be without the mention of donuts? We’ve become suckers for these delicious morsels of goodness. There’s a definitive guide to delicious donuts here, but we favour the plum jam numbers at the Europa Cake Shop in Acland Street. Sure, they’re not exactly Americana … but their plump, doughy juiciness can’t be beat.
