Local Community

After enjoying huge success last year across Australia, the Scandinavian Film Festival is back again for 2015. Baysiders can immerse themselves in Scandinavian culture by attending the many movies on offer at Palace Cinemas in South Yarra and Brighton Bay from July 22nd to the 29th. Here are
C&G’s top picks for the festival this year.

The Sunfish – Denmark

60 year old fisherman Kesse is struggling to make ends meet. Newly imposed environmental regulations and declining numbers of fish in the local seas are making things increasingly difficult. He reluctantly agrees to take marine biologist Gerd on board in exchange for an extra set of fish quotas that could help him stay financially afloat. A romance soon blossoms between Kesse and his new female crew member, breathing life into his once tired life.

Young Sophie Bell – Sweden

In partnership with the Scandinavian Film Festival, Aesop is pleased to present Amanda Adolfsson’s debut feature Young Sophie Bell. Best friends Sophie and Alice have just graduated high school and are about to move to Berlin. But things take a sudden turn when Alice disappears. In an effort to find her, Sophie retraces her steps while at the same time learning about love, life and independence. Inspired by The Virgin Suicides, this special event is not to be missed.

Rams – Iceland

This funny and beautifully shot film is set in a remote valley in Iceland. It tells the tale of two estranged brothers, Gummi and Kiddi who have not spoken to each other in over 40 years despite the fact that they live and farm their sheep side by side. But when a disease comes to the valley and farmers are forced to give up their land, the brothers are faced with the choice of putting their differences aside and banding together to fight for what they love.

They Have Escaped – Finland

Dreams, reality and hallucinations collide in Finnish filmmaker Jukka-Pekka Valkeapää’s darkly uncompromising tale. Joni is a shy boy fleeing the military who is sent to a halfway house where he meets and the wild and rebellious Raisa. Their disregard for the rules and desire for freedom leads them escape, steal and embark on a journey through the country side filled with passion, violence and drugs.
