You’re In Good Company

Local Community

At
C&G, we love the suburbs we service, particularly St Kilda. Turns out, we’re not the only ones. Today we’ve sought out some of the famous faces who call St Kilda home – and it’s many moments in the limelight.

With its urban lifestyle, create community and all round good vibes, it’s no wonder that some of Melbourne’s famous faces have pitched up and called STK their home. Rachel Griffiths who shot to fame after starring in 2004 movie Muriel’s Wedding is regularly seen grabbing coffee on Acland Street, while Iain Hewitson is also a resident – and co-owns Barney Allen’s on Fitzroy street. Australian blonde bombshell, Margot Robbie, was also a St Kilda resident before she took Hollywood by storm starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Visual artist Rupert Bunny was born in St Kilda in the 1800s. His work took him across the globe to parts of France, but Bunny returned to Australia and settled in South Yarra in 1933. Once a southsider, always a southsider! Morris West – a master of the written arts and known for his novel The Devil’s Advocate – was also born in St Kilda. It seems the trendy suburb is quite the hub of artistic creativity.

For most familiar with St Kilda, The Secret Life of Us is the most notable television representation of the bayside suburb. Airing in the early noughties, TSLOU was centred around life on Acland Street, Fitzroy Street and the Esplanade Hotel. Many of the fictional features of the show, namely the Foo Bar, were often the subject of tourists’ quests for a slice of the action, though sadly they didn’t exist. St Kilda Bowls Club, on the other hand, was real – and now attracts numerous visitors looking to re-enact the lives of the characters.

St Kilda was also the home of character Phryne Fisher from Kerry Greenwood’s detective novel series – which have since been made into a television series, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

So, if you’re a St Kilda dweller already, or you’re thinking of making the move, you’re certainly in good company.
