C&G’s Guide: Saving Energy While Working from Home

Tips & Advice

While dining out and socialising is on the calendar again, working from home is likely to stay for the foreseeable future. Perhaps your employer is considering integrating it into the normal work week? Regardless, changing your routine to remote working will undoubtedly lead to higher energy usage and bills! This latest C&G blog lists some simple ways you can save energy and money as you work remotely.

Check your computer’s power settings.

Alter your computer’s settings so it can switch to an energy-saving mode when you’re away from your desk. While some people will require a computer, laptops are generally more energy efficient as they don’t always need to be plugged in.

Use a power board.

If you have a lot of devices and chargers, plug them into one power board. This way, you can easily switch everything off with one button when you are away from your home office. Too often, energy is wasted on plugged in items that aren’t being used. Another reason to invest in this nifty product? You can keep your wires organised and neat!

Be smart with your lighting.

Position your home office in a brightly lit room so you can take advantage of natural light during the day. If you’re near a window – perfect! It can be great for letting air in throughout the day, preventing you from turning on the air conditioner or fan. It’s a smart idea to also invest in LED lightbulbs, and a single desk lamp instead of turning on multiple ceiling lights. Make sure these are turned off whenever you leave the room.

Research what tax deductions you can claim.

Many employees were able to claim a working at home deduction during the last financial year, using a shortcut method provided by the ATO. While your next tax return isn’t due for months, it doesn’t hurt to start researching and completing your due diligence. This may involve taking the correct records or seeking professional advice to determine what else you may be eligible for.
