C&G's Guide to Designing a Small Space

Tips & Advice

Trying to fit everything you need into a small space is challenging. Trying to achieve this while also creating a beautiful, inviting room is an even greater challenge! Whether it’s your kitchen, living room or bedroom, a space that’s cramped and cluttered isn’t one you’ll want to spend time in. In this C&G blog, we bring you some top design tips that will help you get the most out of your small space, and even increase its resale value!

Make your furniture work harder

Whenever possible, try to include pieces of furniture that can serve multiple purposes. This will make a room feel less cluttered by reducing the overall amount of furniture in the space without losing any functionality. For example, you could use a table that functions as both a desk and dining table, get a deep sofa that can double as a guest bed, or buy an ottoman that also serves as a coffee table and bonus seats when guests are over.

Clear the floor

You need space for the essentials, but even the most perfectly decorated small room doesn’t work if you can’t walk in it. Try floating pieces, such as shelves and nightstands, to keep the ground clear of obstacles and create space for extra storage beneath if needed. The same can be done for lighting. Instead of a standing lamp, opt for sconces, wall lights and hanging lights rather than floor lamps.

Choose a large rug

It might seem counterintuitive to choose a large rug, but this is a trick interior designers and stylists often use to make a small space feel larger. Unlike smaller rugs, the large size doesn't visually break up the floor, instead visually extending its length.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall

It may be one of the oldest design tricks in the book, but you should never underestimate the power of a well-placed mirror. Be it decorative or large and installed, mirrors have an amazing ability to make a room feel open and airy by reflecting a space back on itself. Furthermore, they’re a great way to add your own personal style or personality to a room without taking up much space.

Customise your storage

Bespoke built-ins, storage nooks and customised shelving will all help to utilise every inch of the space in the most practical way. Customise your storage to your exact needs and lifestyle to ensure there’s space for larger, bulkier objects that would take up valuable floor space. For example, if you're a keen reader, make sure there’s ample storage for all of your books. Perhaps you’re an avid mountain bike rider? In which case you could install rails on your wall from which to hang your bike.
