C&G’s Guide to Making your Home Greener

Tips & Advice

After spending much of 2020 at home, it’s easy to see how much energy your home consumes, and its impact on both your bills and the environment! Whether you’ve already transitioned your lifestyle or beginning to make new changes, it’s never too late to start building eco-friendly habits. In this latest C&G blog, we list some simple ways to make your home ‘greener.’

Invest in a compost bin.

Instead of throwing away leftovers, set up a composting system to recycle your organic waste. Not only does this prevent less waste entering landfill, but you can turn them into nutrient-rich fertiliser to improve your garden soil and houseplants! And who said bins had to be an eyesore? We’re loving Seed & Sprout’s super stylish compost bin, the perfect addition to your kitchen!

Commit to cold.

Avoid putting your laundry through a hot wash cycle if you can. Approximately 90% of a washing machine’s power consumption actually contributes towards heating the water! By switching to a cold wash for your everyday essentials, you’ll reduce your power usage and also help your clothes last longer! Cold water is less likely to shrink fabrics or cause them to fade in colour. It is also necessary for delicate materials such as silk and lace.

Skip the dryer.

In addition to switching up your laundry settings, take advantage of the warm Summer days and air-dry your washing when possible. You’ll be using one less appliance altogether, and you’ll also prolong your clothes’ lifespan this way. You can line-dry your clothes outside or even set up a drying rack inside if you live in an apartment.

Consider a water filter.

If you find yourself often buying water in plastic bottles, consider a water filter for your home. Whether you invest in a whole-house system or a simple pitcher filter, you’ll immediately cut back on your single-use plastic consumption.
