C&G’s Guide to Moving House

Tips & Advice

Moving homes is both an exciting and tiring endeavour. While you’re excited to begin the next phase of your life, you’ll have to endure the physical labour of getting your belongings there first. However, organisation is the key to success, and you’ll enjoy a stress-free day if you start preparing early! This latest C&G blog is full of useful tips to assist your next move.

Have you booked your removalist service?

If you have a big move planned, it may be worth engaging professional movers. Spend some time researching different companies to find the most reliable and cost-effective service. It’s a good idea to lock in your movers once you know your move date, just in case they’re in high demand or an unexpected change occurs. You’ll have plenty of breathing space to change your booking or schedule.

It’s never too early to start packing.

Start saying ‘yes’ to free boxes! Start with the items you seldom use, such as big coats or blankets if you’re moving during Summer. Categorising your belongings and marking your boxes will also make it easier to unpack when you reach your new home.

De-clutter and throw away anything you don’t need.

As you pack, take the opportunity to declutter your life and donate or dispose anything you no longer use. You’ll be grateful when moving day arrives and your workload is reduced significantly! Do keep an eye on your neighbourhood’s hard rubbish collection dates as well, especially if you have old furniture or larger items that won’t be coming on the trip.

Don’t forget the life admin!

No one enjoys this part – we understand! Pay any outstanding fees and ensure the utility companies have your new address. Consider switching to a paperless system if you normally get your bills delivered in the mail, as this can prevent mix-ups or late fees.

Ensure service providers such as banks, schools, road authorities and government bodies have your new address and contact details. If you have any active subscription services you may need to cancel them, or provide a forwarding address to redirect your deliveries.

Once you decide on your move-out date, it is also crucial to disconnect your current utilities – this would be gas, electricity, water, phone and internet connection. You can also arrange for these to be set up at your new home so moving in is a seamless and stress-free process!
