C & G’s Guide to Spring Cleaning Your Home!

Next week is officially the start of spring – and after the cold and wet winter we’ve had in Melbourne’s bayside – we’ve been counting down the days!

Spring cleaning is a great way to shake off those winter blues, refresh your home and declutter. And if you’re in the bayside Melbourne area, you can donate any good quality unwanted items to the Sacred Heart Mission Op Shop. We call that a win win for sure!

Here are just some of our team's favourite tried and tested tips for your 2024 Spring Clean –

Declutter First

Before diving into cleaning, declutter your space. Go room by room and assess what you truly need. Donate or recycle items you no longer use. Remember, one person’s clutter is another person’s treasure!

Start High, Go Low

Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, and shelves first. Then work your way down to surfaces, furniture, and floors. This prevents dust from settling on freshly cleaned areas.

Tackle One Room at a Time

Don’t overwhelm yourself by trying to clean the entire house in one day. Focus on one room, finish it, and move on. Celebrate small victories!

Deep Clean Carpets and Upholstery

Rent a carpet cleaner or hire professionals to deep clean your carpets and upholstery. It’s amazing how much fresher your home will feel afterward.

Wash Windows and Curtains/Blinds

Clean windows inside and out. Remove curtains and blinds and wash or dry clean them. Sunlight will brighten up your space.

Kitchen and Bathroom Overhaul

Scrub kitchen appliances, sanitize countertops, and organize pantry shelves – toss out all those expired dried herbs and grains! In the bathroom, clean tiles, grout, and replace old shower curtains.

Don’t Forget the Little Things

Clean light switches, doorknobs, and skirting boards. These small details make a big difference.

Freshen Up Bedding

Launder doonas (or air them in the sunshine) and consider replacing well used pillows. Rotate your mattress for even wear and a better night’s sleep.

Recycle Unwanted Items

If you’re in bayside Melbourne, consider donating to the Sacred Heart Mission Op Shop. They accept furniture, clothing, and more. Plus, it’s for a good cause!

* Free Collection Service: The Sacred Heart Mission offers a free collection service for larger donations within the Melbourne region. They’ll come to your home or business to collect donated goods promptly. If you have furniture or bulk items, this is a convenient option. To arrange a booking, call them at (03) 8658 1698 or complete their online collection request form.

* What They Collect: They accept a variety of items, but please ensure they are in good condition. Items they do not collect include broken, stained, or unsaleable goods, mattresses, analog TVs, large desks, and more. If you’re unsure, ask yourself, “Would I buy that?” If not, consider recycling it.

* Op Shops: Sacred Heart Mission has several op shops, each with its unique style. Unlike other charities, they accept donations by hand, so you get a personal thank-you. Check out the op shop closest to you and contribute to their mission.
