C&G’s Guide To ANZAC Day 2022
This Monday the 25th of April is ANZAC Day. The nationwide commemoration acknowledges the millions of brave service personnel from Australia and New Zealand who have fought together in conflicts and peacekeeping operations since the First World War, right through to today. We honour their sacrifice and thank them for their bravery.
Thousands of dawn services, celebrations and marches are set to take place all over the country. Here is C&G’s Guide to ANZAC Day in Melbourne (and Bayside)
Light Up The Dawn
All Victorians are encouraged to participate in the Light Up The Dawn initiative by lighting a candle at 6AM and standing on either your driveway or balcony, or in your living room, and holding a one minute silence to commemorate veterans past and present. Learn more about Light Up The Dawn on their website.
ANZAC Day Broadcast live from the Hampton RSL
Bayside radio station 88.3 Southern FM will be broadcasting live from the Hampton RSL ANZAC Day service from 5:30AM, followed by special coverage from Allan Page and Bob Lawson discussing our ANZAC history as well as interviews with some local Bayside veterans.
Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance
All Victorians are invited to attend the annual Dawn Service held at the Shrine of Remembrance, scheduled to begin as the sun rises at 5:30AM. This year’s service will be particularly significant as it coincides with the 60 year anniversary of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. If you cannot attend the service in person you can watch the livestream on the Shrine of Remembrance website or across both RSL Victoria and the Shrine’s social media networks. This will also include the official ANZAC Day march.
Unlike the past two services, the 2022 event does not require attendees to register. Learn more about the service on the Shrine of Remembrance website.
ANZAC Day March
Following the Dawn Service, the Anzac Day Parade will begin along St Kilda Road at 9:30AM. Thousands of veterans and their families will join the march at the Flinders Street and Swanston Street intersection before finishing at the Shrine Of Remembrance. Wreaths will be laid at the Shrine Of Remembrance throughout the march. For those who wish to view the march but are unable to participate, the best vantage point is along the sidewalk of St Kilda Street, with perfect views of the marching veterans, family members, and representatives from the Australian Defence Force. It’s advised to arrive early in order to guarantee a good spot.
Bayside locals should note that St Kilda Road will be closed to both traffic and trams between 12 am and 2 pm between Flinders and Park Streets. Roads surrounding the Shrine Of Remembrance will also be closed, including Linlithgow Avenue, Birdwood Avenue, Dallas Brooks Drive, and Government House Drive.
Commemorative Service, Shrine of Remembrance
Official proceedings for the day will conclude with the Anzac Day commemorative service at the Shrine of Remembrance Forecourt. This service is ideal for those who are unable to attend the dawn service but still want to pay their respects. The service will feature an address from the Governor of Victoria, the Honourable Linda Desseau, who will also lay a wreath at the shrine’s Eternal Flame. This event will also be livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person.
