Melbourne’s best snow destinations

Local Community

The time for snow adventures is almost upon us, and being based in Melbourne gives you access to some of the best snow resorts in the world! The Victorian High Country is close enough to drive to, and depending on the kind of experience you’re looking for, C&G’s pick of the slopes will inspire you to dig out your snow gear, put the chains on the car and get ready for an Alpine adventure.

Mt Buller

Driving distance from Melbourne: 3 hours

With 300 hectares for skiing, two toboggan parks and a bustling village full of bars and restaurants, Mt Buller is a large resort complete with a crèche for the littlies. The resort will celebrate the season opening on June 11 (Queen’s Birthday weekend), with plenty of events including a ‘Magical Mountains Show’ for kids, complimentary drinks and roasted chestnuts, fireworks and live music.

Mt Hotham

Driving distance from Melbourne: 4.5 hours

With some of the highest peaks in Australia, Mt Hotham’s alpine village is built on an epic mountain ridge connected to Melbourne via the Great Alpine Road. The snowfields span 320 hectares and feature slopes for all ability-levels. Activities include tobogganing, skiing, snowboarding and even dog-sledding! The village also features 18 bars and restaurants, and some of the most panoramic views you’ll ever see.

Falls Creek

Driving distance from Melbourne: 4.5 hours

It’s Victoria’s largest alpine resort, with plenty of attractions for the whole family. Falls Creek Alpine Resort is also popular for bushwalking, cycling and motocross activities during the off-season. During snow season, however, you can take the snowcat from the resort to the peak of Mount McKay, where the slopes are beginner and intermediate-friendly. If you can make it up the Mountain for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, don’t miss the Snow Capped Comedy show, which is a Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow event!

Mt Baw Baw

Driving distance from Melbourne: 2.5 hours

Mt Baw Baw is the closest alpine village to Melbourne, a downhill ski resort offering outdoor adventures for all ages. With tobogganing, skiing, snowboarding, dog sled tours and even a sauna / rockpool spa, it’s an easy weekend away for the whole family. The only downside is that the snow fields are considerably smaller than the larger resorts, with 35 hectares in total – but this does mean that wherever you are, you’ll be closer to your accommodation.

C&G advises purchasing all resort passes, lift passes, accommodations and gear hire (along with any lessons you may like to take part in) in advance, to take advantage of online deals and avoid missing out on the day.
